Frequently Asked Questions & Answers:

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a medical system that has been used in China for 23 centuries to diagnose, treat and prevent illness, relieve pain, enhance recuperative powers, strengthen the immune system, support physical and emotional health, and improve overall function and well-being.  It has evolved into a complete and holistic medical system and it is done by inserting needles and applying heat or electrical stimulation at very precise acupuncture points on the body.

How does this system work?

The Chinese developed acupuncture in accordance with the theory that energy flows through channels between the surface of the body and internal organs. These energy channels are called “Meridians”. There are many acupuncture points on the human body that connect with the 12 main and eight secondary “meridians” or channels. There is a vital life energy called Qi (pronounced " chi) circulating within the body. Meridians are like rivers within your body. Whenever a river flows, it brings water that provides nourishment and life to the land, plants and people around it. Meridians transport life Qi that provides nourishment to every cell, tissue, muscle, organ and gland in the body. It is important for Qi to flow freely throughout the body. A blockage in the flow of Qi anywhere in the body will inhibit the amount of nourishment that reaches our tissue and muscle, organ and gland. The meridians can be influenced by placing needles in the acupuncture points. The acupuncture needles unblock at dams, and reestablish the regular flow through the meridians. Acupuncture treatment can therefore help the body's internal organs to correct imbalances in their digestion, absorption, energy production and in the circulation of their energy through the meridians.

Needing the acupuncture points stimulates the nervous system to release chemicals in the muscles, spinal, and brain. These chemicals will either change the experience of pain, or they will trigger the release of other chemicals and hormones which influence the body's own internal regulating system.

The improved energy and biochemical balance produced by acupuncture results in stimulating the body's natural healing abilities, and promotes physical and emotion well-being.

What is an Acupuncture treatment like?

Extremely fine, hair-thin, flexible needles are placed at specific points on the energetic pathways, known as meridians. When the needles are inserted, you may experience a sensation of tingling or warmth. People are surprised to find that treatments are actually quite relaxing. The length and frequency of treatment may vary for each individual and will be determined by our Acupuncturist. Acupuncture treatments are scheduled according to the nature of your condition. As you improve, fever visits are required. Please keep in mind that each individual is different.

Why did my acupuncturist recommend herbs?

Herbs can be very good helper to Acupuncture in building up your internal strength so you can receive the full benefits acupuncture has to offer. Ancient Chinese herbal formulas are as effective now as they were when first introduced more than 2,000 years ago. Most formulas consist of two to eighteen different types of herbs. Formulas treat a wide variety of symptoms while stimulating the body’s natural healing process. Hospital studies prescribing individualized complex herbal formulas have demonstrated excellent results with patients who fail to respond to conventional pharmaceutical treatments.

Is acupuncture safe for children?

Yes, definitely.  We use very small size needles for children.  During the session, Dr. Chen always gives a little massage on the points before inserting needles and after the needles are pulled out.

How many treatments will I need?

Everyone is unique so the number of treatments will vary from person to person. Most patients can experience immediate relief even after the first treatment; others may take longer time to achieve results. Usually the longer your problem existed, the more treatments will be needed.

Treatment frequency also depends on your constitution, the severity and duration of the problem and the quality and quantity of the balance of your Qi.  Dr. Chen may suggest one or two treatments per week, or monthly visits for optimal health.

How much does it cost?

Currently, 53 Acupuncture charges $79 for the first visit including the acupuncture treatment. Follow-up treatments are $59 each visit.  For detail information, please check fees & services.

How safe is acupuncture?

It is extremely safe because It is an all-natural, drug-free therapy, has no side effects. There is little danger of infection from acupuncture needles for they are sterile, used once and properly disposed.
